I believe in second chances and how an individual should not be defined by their worst decision. I know what it means to be given a second chance and create the most with that opportunity. I have been described as a prisoner, a gang member, and someone not worthy of being a productive member of society. Those were lies and thankfully I , my family, and friends never bought into those stigmas. I got out of prison in 11 years instead of the potential life sentence I received. Today I am a semester away from completing my Bachelor’s degree Cum Laude in sociology from San Francisco State University. I am a certified AOD Counselor and I work with individuals on parole for the Daily Reporting Center. I could not have done this by myself. My family, Project Rebound, the DRC and the Reentry Center provided me with resources upon my release. Without this support I would have been lost. It is my goal to provide resources and evidence based treatment for those who are returning citizens to assist them to create their own successes. As a formerly incarcerated person, I see myself as an ambassador for those who are still incarcerated and to continue my growth to demonstrate rehabilitation is real, so others receive their next chance at freedom and success .
